Syd Barrowman is a painter, curator, and creative director based in Savannah, GA. Originally from Lexington, KY. Syd moved to Savannah to attend Savannah College of Art and Design. While at SCAD she fell in love with the process of curation and started her own gallery out of her apartment in 2022. Syd is the founder and creative director of 521 Art Lounge, an unconventional community gallery and lounge based in Savannah, GA. 521 has hosted and curated 6 shows around Savannah, representing dozens of local artists through thematic and community based exhibitions. Separate from 521, Syd also likes to curate different local shows around Savannah working with many talented local artists. 

In the studio, Syd’s work is focused on the distortion and ambiguity of the figure. She works in oil and house paint, and explores both abstraction in contrast with more rendered and defined figures. Her paintings are  focused on defining the conversation between these two distinct studio techniques. She is very interested in the distortion, destruction, and reconfiguration of a familiar figure bleeding into a space of abstraction, where she aims to create indistinguishable yet familiar scenes that reject the literal portrayal of life. 

She currently attends the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she is completing her BFA in painting with a minor in business and entrepreneurship (expected June 2024).
